Life ADA - ADaptation in Agriculture
UnipolSai on the Side of Agriculture
Aiming to increase the agricultural sector’s resilience to climate change, UnipolSai stands as the leader of the project LIFE ADA - ADaptation in Agriculture, funded by the European Union as part of the European LIFE calls for proposals.
UnipolSai - together with its partners ARPAE Emilia-Romagna, Cia–Agricoltori Italiani, CREA Politiche e Bioeconomia, Festambiente, Legacoop Agroalimentare Nord Italia, Leithà and Regione Emilia-Romagna - aims to achieve solid objectives in terms of resilience to climate change along 3 agri-food supply chains: dairy products (Parmesan cheese), wine, and fruit and vegetables.
In particular, LIFE ADA aims to:
- transfer knowledge about climate scenarios together with risk management and adaptive measures to improve the farmers’ ability to address current and future climate risks;
- build adequate tools to support the decision-making process in defining efficient adaptation plans at the farm and supply chain level;
- define a consistent strategy for policies at the regional level to support the farmers’ adaptive planning;
- promote an innovative approach by insurers to strengthen risk reduction capacity in order to maintain the insurability of farmers in the long term, despite the increase in catastrophic and systemic risks.
In order to reach the largest number of farmers and Producer Organisations and support them in the decision-making process for the drafting of their adaptation plans, a tool will be built which, by using algorithms, will highlight the current and future risks to which the user is exposed, as well as any possible action that can be put in place to address them.
The project will be implemented in Emilia-Romagna on an experimental basis, and then replicated in Veneto, Tuscany and Lazio, thus witnessing an increase in farmers involved starting from 50 in the pilot area to reach 6,000 individual farmers in the selected regions and up to 15,000 farmers at the national level.
The project objectives will be successfully achieved also thanks to the implementation of an innovative model of public-private partnership between the insurance sector, the public administration (Regional Authorities), technical-scientific institutions, NGOs and aggregated forms of producers (Italian producer organisations or cooperatives).
